つまみ細工とは、その名のとおり『摘んでつくる手工芸』のことです。江戸時代から伝わる技法で薄絹の羽二重を正方形に小さく切り、それを摘んで折りたたみ組み合わせることによって花や鳥の文様をつくる伝統工芸です。

舞妓さんのアクセサリーとして普及してきました。花びらの外側が丸いものを「丸つまみ」、ツンと尖っているものを「剣つまみ」といいます。丸つまみ、剣つまみの２種の技法を組み合わせて実に多彩な世界を表現します。近頃ではバラの形のようなつまみ細工も人気があります。

Tsumami-zaiku is "handcraft made by picking". It is traditional craft that cuts Habutai silk(type of silk) into squares with the traditional method from the Edo period, creates flowers and bird patterns by picking it.

Tsumami is mainly used by young geisha called “Maiko”.Round petals are called "Marutsumami"(round knobs), and sharp petals are called "Kentsumami"(sword knobs).Tsumami-zaiku will combine these two techniques.Recently the rose pattern is also popular.
